Bursitis is the inflammation or irritation of the bursa. There are several area in the body that have a bursa.  There is bursa in the elbow, shoulder, hip, knee, and heel. Bursitis is often caused by repetitive, minor or trauma induced injury to the area. Tendons as we get older tolerate stress less because they are not as elastic as they use to be, and tear easier. Overuse or injury to the joint at work or play can also increase the chances of getting bursitis. You can be a weekend warrior and are doing activities that you do not normally do, like pushing, shoving, lifting, gardening, raking, carpentry, shoveling, painting, scrubbing, or playing a sport like tennis, golf, skiing, or  baseball with its throwing the ball and swinging the bat.

An abnormal or poorly placed bone or shoulder joint can cause added stress on a bursa sac which will in turn inflame the bursa causing bursitis. Stress or inflammation from other conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, gout, psoriatic arthritis, thyroid disorders, or unusual medication reactions or an infection can also lead to inflammation of a bursa.

The most common symptom of bursitis is pain. The pain may build up gradually or be sudden and severe with loss of motion. In the shoulder it is called “adhesive capsulitis” or frozen shoulder, besides the bursitis itself. The end result is immobility and pain associated with shoulder bursitis.

Bursitis can be treated in a number of ways, including avoiding activities that aggravate the problem, resting the injured area, icing the area the day of the injury, getting the joint that is poorly positioned back in proper positioned, ultrasound the inflammation, and laser the fibrotic adhesions, and exercises especially and specifically designed to restore normal muscle activity.
